CAMINO DE SANTIAGO
1.- Logroño
Logroño: 25 Km. From Nájera, is the capital of the autonomus community and has aproximately 140.000 inhabitants.
Inside you can find the remains of what was an important Roman enclave named Vareia. Alfonso VI granted the city the Jurisdiction of Logroño, which had special relevance in the law world.
Artistically the churches Santa María de Palacio with its gothic tower in the shape of a piramidal needle, its temple is from the late romanesque and the church of San Bartolomé, Sta María la Redonda or Santiago stand out.
The historical buildings or remains that stand out are the provincial museum which was General Esparter's house, the Parliament of La Rioja and wall and door of the ¨revellin¨. Apart from its mutiple restaurants, no one should leave the city without trying some tapas or pinchos and wine on Laurel and San Juan street.
2.- Navarrete
Navarrete was named ¨conjunto Historico Artistico¨ for its historical and monumental interest. Its church from the XVI century and the portal of the Cemetery stand out. Becouse of its proximity to the capital, its population and industry have increased, its no longer determined by its pottery that its well known for.
3.- Santo Domingo
It's a crucial landmark of the Camino de Santiago in Rioja, next to the river Oja, with a population of approximately 6.300 inhabitants.
Saint Domingo was educated in Valvanera's Monastery and devoted his life to helping pilgrims, playing a great role in improving the comunications inbetween the roman paved road and the river Oja's bridge, the hospital and the pilgrim hostels in the year 1.044.
He's said to have performed multiple miracles related to this path and to the pilgrims and that is why inside the cathedral, they have a live rooster and hen, to remember one of his miracles. When the Saint died the town started growing around his chapel and the cathedral is worth visiting, the house of the Saint, the square and the old part of town.
