NÁJERA AND IT'S HISTORY

Monastery of Sta. Mª la Real

Nájera's origins go back to prehistoric times, passing through it diferent cultures: Iberians, Celts, Pelendones, Vascones, Berones or Romans, though the name seems to be Arab (Naxara or place among rocks), but it is in the Xth and XIth centurie when it reaches it's maximum importance and turns into the capital of the then extensive Kingdom of Nájera-Pamplona where the reign of Sancho III el Mayor (1004-1035) stands out.

Sancho III granted Nájera's famous Jurisdiction, origin of the of Navarre and basic legislation of the national right and turned Nájera into a key point of the jacobea route. When he died he distributed his land between his children, remaining his son, Don García, in Nájera. Don García founded both monasterys Sta Mª la Real (Romanesque) and San Millán de Yuso. He instituted the Order of the Gentlemen of the Tenaza and died in Atapuerca's battle against his brother Fernando, king of Castile. Alfonso VIII born in Nájera later annexed the Kingdom of Nájera to Castile

Nájera was also a witness of the proclamation of Fernando III el Santo as King of Castile or of Nájera's Battle between Pedro I el Cruel and Enrique de Trastamara.

Monastery of Sta. Mª la Real

It was founded in the year 1032 by the king Don García Sanchez III in the place where he found an image of the Virgin Mary.
